2008 - 2009 REDWOOD HIGH MUSIC DEPARTMENT PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP
This class is designed as a project based workshop focusing on guitar, bass guitar, drums and piano as the primary (core) instruments. Others may, and in some cases already do, include vocals, singer-songwriter, banjo, mandolin or wind instruments. All styles of music such as folk, blues, rock, country, classical, bluegrass, jazz, personal composition, modern and contemporary pop/rock will be explored, learned and implemented throughout the course of this class. Ear training, Theory and Reading are also basic skills that are a major component of this course.
This is a project-based class and students will be graded objectively according to assigned work, and subjectively according to their participation, progress, and natural talent/skill. Class Music will be assigned, and grades are weighted on the completion of assigned music as well as personally chosen project-based music.
Audio recordings of the students' work will be part of the "portfolio" of heir work in this class. Studio time will be granted only after Mr. Mattern has heard your material. Wednesdays and Fridays are listening and performance/audition times. Students MUST complete at least ONE recorded piece in the school studio per semester.
Performance Workshop is NOT a "jam session" class. Use of amps and drums are only allowed by authorization from Mr. Mattern.
*Drummers need to purchase Alfred's Drum Method Book One, and Stick Control by Geo. Lawrence Stone. The Magic Flute in San Rafael carries them.
MR. MATTERN will always be available at lunch, office hours or available to set an appointment for after school tutoring, or assistance with any special needs or help. jmattern@redwood.org. 945-3681
