Concert Performances
Performance opportunities for students are created, funded and produced by the Redwood Music Department. The Music Boosters provides whatever resources are needed to assist in these events.
There are fall workshops/clinics and a fundraising benefit show.
Winter concerts in the Little Theatre include Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble plus the Jazz Band and ensembles. There are also three nights of concerts featuring the Performance Workshop classes which range from original singer/songwriter pieces to rock covers (these have often ended with a large band R&B performance).
Traveling to concerts, competitions and festivals usually takes place during winter and early spring, culminating with the spring concerts in the Little Theatre (same format as the Winter shows). Other events provide performance opportunities until early June ... check the website for recordings and photos from various venues.
The students from Jazz A, Wind Ensemble and Advanced Performance Workshop traveled to Yosemite in April 2011 for a weekend of day hikes and evening performances.
Sierra High visited and performed at Redwood High in May, 2011.
Music Boosters Fund Raising
The Redwood Foundation funds the majority of the Music department instruction, instrument repair and capital expenses. However, there is a need for additional funds to cover expenses such as transportation, off-site theater rentals, sheet music, guest artists, studio recording, music lesson scholarship etc.
Please consider the many benefits of the Redwood music program to your child. If you are able, we ask that you donate $200. If you believe that this is an important program for your child and you can manage more, please consider contributing at a higher level. As we are striving for 100% participation from families of all music students. We welcome your contribution at any level. Please help us reach our goal!
The Night of Blues Fundraiser for Fall 2010 held at Hillside Church, Corte Madera on November 5 had been a great success.
Redwood High Music Boosters is a California Non-Profit 501 ( c ) (3) Public Charity. If you wish to make a contribution at any time it will be welcomed. Your contributions, payable to Redwood High Music Boosters, may be sent to:

Program Successes
Section Instructions / Guest Artists: Funds from the Redwood Foundation, augmented by the Music Boosters, have enabled the music program to add instruction on a semi-regular basis for many of the sections. Additionally, John Mattern has booked numerous guest performances. This program brings professional performing and teaching musicians to the music students.
Middle School Outreach: Funds from the Music Boosters provided refreshments for an evening of 'meet and greet' bbq for music students in the local middle schools in our district. Private middle school outreach is important too. A separate Music Boosters committee focuses attention on all the area middle schools in an effort to educate teachers and parents about the quality of the music program at Redwood.
Save Our Steinway Campaign: The department owns a beautiful, high quality 1927 Steinway 'L' grand piano that had fallen into disrepair. The Music Boosters, with assistance from the Redwood Foundation, was able to have this wonderful piano fully refurbished.
Music Program Status
When John Mattern came to Redwood High School, the music program was at its lowest ebb in school history. John has worked hard to renew the music program for our children. He has added innovative classes and offers boundless energy and inspiration. In addition to his fabulous work with the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz band and ensembles, John Mattern's innovations have brought the first UC accredited music program of which we are aware for students in rock, folk, "beginning guitar and bass," and Performance Workshop.
Our motivated students have devoted significant energy and effort to their classwork and performances. Parents of music students have similarly provided support in every imaginable way. The Music program has been reborn and is soaring to new heights!
In 2006, John Mattern was honored with the KDFC Music Educator of the Year award as a result of his dedication and outstanding success with his students and the music program. (KDFC is the classical music station of San Francisco.)
